Seeing Gray Whales in Baja had been on our Baja bucket list but our timing never seemed to be right. This past February on our way back to Mulege we decided to stop at Puerto Adolfo Lopez Mateos and go on a tour. The road out from Ciudad Insurgentes had been recently repaved and was an easy drive even with our RV. We booked an 8 am tour with Piratas Tours and they confirmed we could stay the night in the parking lot. We paid 10 pesos per person or about a buck US total.
The whale watching center was really nice. It looked like the government has invested in this town and center. We had a great seafood dinner at one of the restaurants in the center and went to bed early. We woke up the next morning to calm conditions and whales cruising around the lagoon.
Our guide and captain, Jimmy was awesome. He spoke great English and seemed as excited as us to see the whales.
We saw a few babies and moms in the lagoon and then headed out to the sand bar to find the friendly whales who wanted to interact with humans.
Jimmy had us splash the water to attract the whales. Soon we hit pay dirt and found friendly whales who came to the side of the boat to get petted and gently blow some wet salty air at us. Why they choose to interact with humans is unknown but they seemed to enjoy playing with us. It was an amazing experience. We can’t wait to do it again.
What a great experience. In the years we went to Baja we never had this experience. Thanks for sharing.
Si! Hopefully, on your next visit.
That is awesome! I’m jealous!!!
