Hola amigos/amigas. We are now in Antigua, Guatemala. We are studying Spanish at a school or as our guide from Merida, Mexico would say “and now you will know” Spanish. Ha… if only.
The drive from Lake Atitlan was very interesting. The terrain kind of reminded me of the Sierra Nevada foothills in Spring. The narrow two lane road wound through tropical pine forests and had some kind of caves/mines in the side of the hills but I didn’t catch any mention of them from the driver since there was some annoying/neurotic gringa complaining about the driver’s choice of route and I had my iPod going to avoid her braying East Coast accent.
Antigua is the former capital of Guatemala. They moved the captial after one too many earthquakes. The streets are all coblestone and everything is really, really old looking (including Dominos and McDonalds). We ate breakfast at a place that was built in 1542 but the coffee was surprisingly fresh.
